6 October 2020

The innovation issue

Here’s our latest selection of news, tools, tips and ideas for ways you can make a bigger impact every day.

This week we look at:

  • a new way for government agencies to engage Boost
  • the mobile app and beyond
  • Agile training for innovation
  • a new innovation fund
  • Scrum innovation: Making multiple Product Owners work
Using the government Marketplace.

Boost selected as supplier of choice for government digital services

We’re delighted to announce that Boost has been selected as a supplier of choice on the government Marketplace.

It’s great news because it makes it easier for state agencies to work with us to deliver positive lasting impacts for the people of New Zealand.

The Marketplace is designed to simplify procurement for government agencies. Suppliers like Boost have been pre-assessed based on our business record, key personnel, experience, capability and security. This makes it simpler to engage us and keeps costs down. Rather than run through the full government procurement process, you can simply select the Marketplace supplier that will deliver you the best results.

If your agency hasn’t signed up to the Marketplace yet, here’s what you need to know.

The Marketplace divides services into channels and catalogues. You’ll find the services Boost offers in the Digital Experience Services catalogue of the Consultancy and Professional Services channel.

It covers the full suite of our globally-recognised user-centred Agile software development services:

  1. Analytics & SEO
  2. Application Testing
  3. Back-end Development
  4. Change Management Services
  5. Content Design
  6. Front-end Development
  7. Information Architecture
  8. Native Application Development
  9. Project Management Services
  10. User Insight
  11. Visual Design

You can learn more about our work for the public sector on our Government showcase.

The Marketplace will replace the government Web Services Panel (which we’re also on).

What kind of mobile app do you need?

If you want to develop a successful mobile app, you need to deliver the right services in the right way.

But there are lots of different ways to build a mobile app. Do you want a native app, hybrid app or a progressive web application? Maybe a mobile-optimised website is all you need? To maximise the return on your investment, you want to find the option that connects you to your customers as quickly as you can.

Here’s our guidance on different approaches to mobile app development (and why we’re the peeps to do it with).

Time tight to secure your place on our Agile training

Our next Agile Professional Foundation runs on 19–22 October, giving you just two weeks to secure your seat. After that, the next course isn’t until December.

Learn how to deliver more value without leaving your desk

The virtual APF shows you how building an Agile mindset helps you innovate and achieve more in your day-to-day work.

We’ve taken what we’ve learned over 14 years running successful Agile projects and distilled it into a lively, practical, interactive 12-hour online course. To help you soak it all up, the course runs over four consecutive mornings (NZ time). That gives you the afternoon to mull over what it means for you and your specific situation.

Additionally, completing the course gives you accreditation as an ICAgile Certified Professional, enhancing your professional standing in the job marketplace.

Funding available for innovative government collaborations

If you’re in a state agency and you’re wanting funding to pilot an innovative cross-agency initiative, check out the Digital Government Partnership Innovation Fund (DGP).

One of the cool things about the fund is its innovative approach to applications. Rather than developing a time-consuming business case to apply, you simply chat to the team then submit a Lean Canvas.

Innovating in Scrum: Making multiple Product Owners work

One of the most innovative government projects we’ve been involved with is National Library’s DigitalNZ. One of the first examples in the world of an API used to aggregate a nation's digital content, the DigitalNZ website makes it simple to search for and share Kiwi culture online — over 30 million items from 200+ partners.

Also pushing the envelope is the way our National Library Scrum teams use multiple product owners. That’s because the Scrum Guide mandates a single product owner to keep priorities clear and feedback fast.

We’ve managed to make multiple product owners work with these teams, and have put together a case study sharing how it’s been done.
