Staying secure in the cloud

As our data and applications move from our own servers to the cloud, we need a cloud-based approach to security. While the principles are the same, the practicalities differ. This applies both to using cloud-based software like Office 365, Xero and suchlike, and to running your own websites or applications on AWS, Azure or GCP.

Security firm McAfee has broken down data from 30 million cloud users and a survey to create a snapshot of the use and security of cloud.

Obviously the resulting report helps McAfee promote their MVISION cloud security product, but it also helps us avoid the common traps. It’s a little alarming to read, for example, that 12% of respondents believe the cloud service provider is solely responsible for securing the respondents’ own data.

McAfee’s recommendations include:

  • Checking your configurations if you’re using AWS, Azure, GCP etc.
  • Understanding which cloud services hold most of your sensitive data.
  • Locking down sharing.

Is technology cutting us off from human connection?

Working for a technology company with a consciously human-centred culture gives Boost’s Business Development Manager James Nicolle a unique perspective on the ways technology can connect, and can keep us apart.

With that in mind, he was recently asked to contribute an article on the subject to NZBusiness magazine.

Agile training for human beings

While there are lots of digital tools for Agile teams, Agile is not the tools you use. Agile is a way of working that leverages the power of human connection.

That’s why our ICAgile-certified training focuses on building the Agile mindset. When the underlying principles of Agile become second nature, it’s easy to apply it in the real world, with real people. You can then choose the tools and techniques that work best for your team.

The two-day Agile Professional Foundation uses practical, interactive exercises to show how teams can work together to deliver more value, sooner.

Our February course is booked out unfortunately. The next course with seats available runs on 20–21 April.

Copyright for digital GLAMs: Lessons from NDF2019

Last year, James and Nick attended the National Digital Forum, the cultural heritage sector’s conference on all things digital.

Among the many great talks, there were three on the challenges and opportunities around copyright.

Galleries, libraries, archives and museums want to clearly communicate the copyright status of collection items. By making it clear how people can use the items, you get to build stronger connections between your audience, your collection and your institution.

To make communicating copyright easier, we’ve pulled together practical guidance based on the three talks.
