Higher productivity through happy teams: James shows NZBusiness how

Tinypulse Happiest IT company awardFollowing our TinyPulse award as one of the happiest workplaces in the world, NZBusiness magazine tapped James for an article on how to lift productivity by focusing on team happiness.

James shared 6 tips based on our experience at Boost:

  1. Define your purpose, then live it.
  2. Treat your employees as your first customers.
  3. Create a culture of feedback.
  4. Decentralise decision-making.
  5. Bring your customers into your teams.
  6. Celebrate the wins.

Why Boost’s developers enjoy their jobs (and how you can join the team)

Ideally, everyone would love their work. Sadly, not everyone does. So why do Boost’s developers enjoy their jobs?

It’s partly because Ruby on Rails is a key part of our toolkit. Ruby is optimised for developer happiness and Rails for rapid development. As a result, our developers enjoy the development process, and get the satisfaction of regularly seeing their handiwork delivered.

Crucially, as a company Boost is also optimised for happiness and productivity. We only work on projects that make the world a better place. We’re experts at Agile development, so we know how to deliver valuable software week in week out, without ever having to work overtime. And we track team happiness every month, tweaking the way we work accordingly.

The result is a team that loves working together, and working to make a difference.

Know someone who’s not thriving at work?

Do you know a digital designer or developer who’s not reaching their full potential in their current role? Maybe they’re feeling underappreciated or unable to contribute as much as they’d like. Maybe they feel their work doesn’t have meaning or add much to the sum of human happiness.

If so, feel free to let them know about our upcoming Test-drive Boost evening.

Because team happiness is a top priority at Boost, we have quite a distinctive way of working. Of course, not everyone enjoys the same working styles, so we give people the chance to come in to meet the team, experience Boost and see if it suits.

Our next Test-drive Boost event is on 19 August.

How to delegate effectively — checklist

Because we don’t have managers at Boost, anyone can delegate to anyone else. If we realise that we’re not the best person to complete a task effectively, we delegate to the Booster we think is.

But we’d found that we were only partially delegating tasks. We’d still be thinking about the task, wondering if it was done. So we put together the checklist to help us delegate completely. A bit like a definition of done for delegation, it lets us clear the decks for our next piece of work.

Faster, Higher, Stronger — Together

For 2021, the Olympic motto was updated to Faster, Higher, Stronger — Together.

I mention this partly because the motto nicely sums up the collaborative drive for constant improvement at the heart of Agile. But mainly because it’s an excuse to celebrate some amazing athletes.

Check out these YouTube clips of some very happy Kiwis and their medal-winning performances:
