The digitalpasifik.org launch
Building a virtual museum of and for the Pacific
Now you can search and view digitised cultural heritage of the Pacific without leaving your seat. The digitalpasifik.org website opens up access to the Pacific cultural heritage collections of museums, libraries, archives, universities and community groups from all around the world.
The website is a key part of the Pacific Virtual Museum pilot project, which is funded by the Australia government and is implemented by National Library New Zealand, Te Puna Mātauranga in collaboration with the National Library of Australia. The design and development was led by a co-design group from across the Pacific nations and, remarkably, much of the work was done at the height of New Zealand’s COVID-19 lockdown. The results are testament to the power of collaboration and relationship building.
Designed to reflect the sea and stars that enabled the epic voyages of the great Pacific explorers, the site was launched last week. For the people of the Pacific, it’s a chance to see items that are often held far away from their islands.
You can follow the team and progress on Facebook and Twitter, and check out their video.
We’re sure you’ll join us in congratulating all involved.
